In addition, it can also be used for the prevention or treatment of postoperative infection after ocular surgery.  Antibiotics eye drops work by preventing bacteria from multiplying on the surface of cells lining the moist tissues in your body including those in your eyes which causes cell death or injury without blocking multiplication inside cells.

Chloramphenicol: The most commonly used eye drop

Since the discovery of chloramphenicol in 1947, it has been used as an antibiotic and is primarily prescribed for eye infections. Chloramphenicol belongs to a class of antibiotics called broad-spectrum antimicrobials.

It kills bacteria by suppressing their protein synthesis which can lead to cell death and loss of function. It also disrupts DNA replication and transcription, which prevents bacterial growth. Chloramphenicol ophthalmic drops are approved for use in people who have bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible organisms such as staphylococcus aureus or streptococcus pyogenes.

Eye drops: Side effects, drug interaction, and precautions

A lot of people are unaware that eye drops can have side effects. Although precautions Eye drops provide fast relief from dry eyes or redness due to allergies, it is important to note that they also come with potential risks. The most common effect is dryness, which may seem harmless but it’s anything but. Dry eyes lead to a condition called Keratoconjunctivitis sicca or “dry eye syndrome” and this leads to more serious problems like blurry vision and even glaucoma in some cases.

Eye drops also come with precautionary measures that must be followed for you to avoid any long term damage such as: applying lubricating ointment before using the eyedrop, not touching your eyes after applying the medication, not sharing your medications with anyone else, keeping track of when you last used them so they don’t expire, and following any other medication instructions. People who wear contact lenses should avoid wearing contacts for at least 12 hours after applying antibiotic eye drops.
