Celecoxib: What are they, and who uses them

Celecoxib was first made available on the market in 1998. In its original form, Celecoxib was a prescription drug only, but over time it became available as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication in 2000. The Food and Drug Administration currently approves it for OTC use to relieve acute pain, primary dysmenorrhea, and for relief of moderate to severe acute pain.

In addition to treating inflammation from Rheumatic arthritis, Celecoxib has been used to treat other conditions such as menstrual cramps, polyps from the colon or rectum, swelling due to cancer of prostate gland, chronic pelvic pain, headaches related to certain conditions such as giant cell arteritis, painful monthly periods (dysmenorrhea), pain from acute gout attacks, and for reducing the number of colon polyps in people with familial adenomatous polyposis.

    Celecoxib: How Do They Work

This drug is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication that is used to treat pain, inflammation, and arthritis. These drugs are available in prescription strength and over-the-counter versions for consumers who want pain relief without a doctor’s visit or prescription. Celecoxib belongs to a class of medications called COX2 inhibitors which work by decreasing the production of prostaglandins involved in chronic inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, or ankylosing spondylitis. It does this by blocking cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), an enzyme responsible for producing prostaglandins that mediate pain and support the inflammatory process.

     Celecoxib: Common Uses, Side Effects

Many people use Celecoxib for joint pain relief, but they may not know the side effects. This is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that many individuals have used to treat moderate or severe inflammation caused by arthritis or menstrual cramps. It can be taken with or without food.

The main side effect celecoxib is associated with is an increased risk of bleeding. Celecoxib should not be given to people who have recently taken aspirin, ibuprofen, or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs because this increases the chance of severe bleeding.

However, some common side effects should be considered before taking this medicine which can include

  • Dizziness,
  • Lightheadedness,
  • Shortness of breath,
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation

If these symptoms occur, contact your doctor immediately so they can provide advice on how best to proceed with treatment.

Celecoxib: What are the Dangers of Overdosing?

The dangers of overdosing on Celecoxib are a severe issue. In 2010, over 100 people overdosed and died from taking too much Celecoxib. The FDA has issued a warning about the potential for overdose in patients who take the drug long-term or at higher doses than prescribed. Keep in mind the maximum recommended dose for Celecoxib is (400 mg/day), to reduce these dangers, talk with your doctor before increasing the dosage of Celecoxib or other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen.
